About DJ Dzl
![]() That can I say about myself? I'm just a music-lover from Belize who was raised by my British-Jamaican grandma. I grew up like an only-child, though I do have siblings on my father's side. That made for a lot of alone time and so to pass the time I used to dig in my grandma's cassette and CD collection.
Her taste was very eclectic due to her background and living situation. She had everything from Classical to 60s Swing to Bob Marley to Belizean Brukdown in her collection. I was also heavily influenced by American TV stations like MTV and The Box, falling in love with HipHop and Electronic music at the age of 16. As my love and knowledge of music grew, so did my interest in music production. Though I never had formal music training, I learned how to create my own tracks in audio editing software like Cakewalk and Massiva. I also began writing poems that turned into raps and started recording music with friends. When I was invited into the Young Artists Association, I started getting opportunities to perform live all over Belize in front of large crowds at big events. I even wrote a Soca track named "Anaconda" that was so popular my group was given the chance to open up for the Legendary Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires at a packed Belize Civic Center. Although I didn't intend to make music a full-time career, I did manage to do a good job at putting out decent music in the local market; however, I wanted to focus on my academic career as well and took a break from music to pursue my marketing/design studies. It wasn't until I had finished school and settled into my life as an adult that I fell back in love with music...but in a different way. I was living in San Pedro on the island of Ambergris Caye and managed to become friends with local DJs who were running the club scene. I loved how they could take songs and make one continuous mix and how their control of the music could affect people's emotions and help them reminisce and relax and enjoy themselves. I persuaded one of the DJs to teach me how to juggle on turntables after mastering Virtual DJ with just a laptop. I quickly adjusted to the art and launched my career by asking for guest spots in the local clubs and pubs. Then I started landed starring roles and the rest is history. In 2012 I was invited to become a member of the World Famous Bum Squad DJs (now The Mix Syndicate DJs) which connected me to an international network of DJs and opportunities. When I entered into the world of Special Events and Weddings in 2013, I realised that's what I wanted to do. It allowed me to also continue running my other business TG Marketing Solutions and to just DJ on weekends for limited hours. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MUSIC AND LOVE BEING A DJ! MUSIC IS LIFE! |
